Three companies could not fix my intermittent AC freeze up problem. They were able to do it! Tyler came out today for my semi-Annual checkup. Pay $180.00 for the year and they keep your system clean and problem free. You can pay by the month. Ryan was able to make my AC work again! Very capable and this company can really fix things the first time.

So very impressed with this company. Our HVAC gave up the ghost Monday afternoon. We called Airmerica immediately and they sent Ryan to our house the next morning. He was so professional and knowledgeable. He did indeed confirm that our HVAC was indeed gone and irreparable. Ryan was very personable, he was very thorough explaining all of our options for a new system. We ordered our new system and the office called to confirm our order. They kept us informed as to when the system would be delivered and then installed. By Friday we had our new system. Camden and Ryder arrived right on time. These sweet young men made our day. They worked very hard throughout the day. I was so impressed with the work ethic of both of these young men. They worked diligently all day long in excruciating heat. They were very respectful of our home, laying down floor protectors and keeping everything neat and tidy as they worked! I must say... my floors looked better after they left then when they arrived. We so enjoyed having these two in our home! We LOVE our new system! Thank you Airmerica, Ryan, Camden and Ryder!

Heat Pump Repair in Ocean Hills, CA

Airmerica Air Conditioning & Heating provides professional heat pump repair in Ocean Hills, CA for systems that are not heating, not cooling, running constantly, freezing up, making unusual noises, or showing other signs of trouble. Because heat pumps provide both heating and cooling, diagnosing a problem requires understanding how the entire system operates in each mode.

Our technicians evaluate the symptoms, test system operation, and identify the cause before recommending repairs. Airmerica repairs all HVAC brands and serves homeowners throughout Ocean Hills and surrounding North County San Diego communities.

Common Heat Pump Problems We Diagnose

A heat pump problem can originate with electrical components, airflow, controls, refrigerant performance, indoor equipment, outdoor equipment, or the components that allow the system to switch between heating and cooling.

Common heat pump problems include:

  • Heat pump not cooling
  • Heat pump not heating
  • System blowing air that does not feel warm or cool enough
  • Outdoor unit not running
  • Indoor equipment running while the outdoor unit remains off
  • Heat pump running constantly
  • Frequent cycling
  • Ice or excessive frost on the outdoor unit
  • Weak airflow
  • Uneven temperatures throughout the home
  • Unusual noises or vibration
  • Thermostat or control problems
  • Electrical or breaker problems
  • Water or drainage issues

Several different failures can produce similar symptoms, which is why testing the system is more reliable than replacing components based only on what the homeowner is experiencing.

Why Is My Heat Pump Not Cooling?

During cooling operation, a heat pump works much like a central air conditioner by transferring heat from inside the home to the outdoors. If that process is interrupted, the system may continue running without adequately cooling the home.

Cooling problems can be related to:

  • Restricted airflow
  • Dirty indoor or outdoor coils
  • Thermostat or control problems
  • Electrical component failures
  • Outdoor fan problems
  • Refrigerant-related conditions
  • Compressor problems
  • System switching or control issues

If the problem turns out to involve a separate central air conditioning system rather than a heat pump, Airmerica also provides air conditioning repair in Ocean Hills.

Why Is My Heat Pump Not Heating?

A heat pump that cools correctly but does not heat properly may have a problem affecting heating-mode operation. The thermostat may call for heat and the equipment may appear to run, but the air coming from the registers may not provide the expected comfort.

Possible causes include controls, sensors, airflow restrictions, electrical components, refrigerant performance, reversing components, outdoor equipment problems, or supplemental heating components where applicable.

Because heat pump heating feels different from the hotter supply air produced by some furnaces, the temperature of the air alone does not always indicate a failure. System operation should be tested before determining whether a repair is needed.

Why Is My Heat Pump Freezing Up?

Some frost on outdoor heat pump equipment can occur during heating operation. The system periodically uses a defrost cycle to remove normal frost accumulation.

Heavy ice buildup, ice that does not clear, or repeated freezing can indicate a problem that needs attention. Possible causes include:

  • Defrost control problems
  • Sensor issues
  • Restricted outdoor airflow
  • Dirty coils
  • Fan problems
  • Refrigerant-related conditions
  • Other mechanical or control failures

Continuing to operate a system with significant ice buildup can interfere with heat transfer and may place additional strain on the equipment.

Why Does My Heat Pump Run Constantly?

Heat pumps often operate for longer cycles than traditional heating systems, particularly during colder weather. Long run times by themselves do not necessarily indicate a failure.

However, a heat pump that runs almost continuously while failing to maintain the thermostat setting may need evaluation. Potential causes include restricted airflow, dirty components, thermostat settings, duct losses, equipment sizing, refrigerant performance, mechanical problems, or unusually demanding outdoor conditions.

The important question is not simply how long the heat pump runs, but whether it is operating correctly and maintaining the expected indoor comfort.

Heat Pump Airflow Problems

Airflow affects both heating and cooling performance. A heat pump can have functioning refrigeration components and still perform poorly if the indoor equipment cannot move enough air through the system.

Airflow problems may involve:

  • Dirty or restrictive filters
  • Blower problems
  • Dirty indoor coils
  • Restricted return airflow
  • Closed or obstructed registers
  • Damaged or leaking ductwork
  • Improperly balanced duct systems

Airmerica evaluates airflow when it is relevant to the symptoms rather than assuming every heating or cooling problem originates with refrigerant or electrical components.

Electrical and Control Problems

Heat pumps depend on multiple electrical components and controls to coordinate indoor and outdoor equipment. Capacitors, contactors, relays, sensors, circuit boards, motors, thermostats, wiring, and other components may affect system operation.

A failed component can sometimes prevent the entire system from operating. Other electrical problems may cause intermittent operation, unusual cycling, loss of heating or cooling, or problems that appear only under certain operating conditions.

Repeatedly resetting a breaker that continues to trip is not a repair. A recurring electrical problem should be diagnosed so the cause of the trip can be identified.

Finding the Cause Before Recommending Repairs

Replacing a component without understanding why it failed can leave the underlying problem unresolved. For example, an electrical component may fail because of normal wear, but it can also be affected by abnormal operating conditions elsewhere in the system.

Airmerica approaches heat pump repair by evaluating the operating sequence and testing the components related to the reported problem. Depending on the symptoms, diagnosis may involve:

  • Thermostat and control operation
  • Electrical measurements
  • Indoor and outdoor fan operation
  • Airflow
  • Temperature performance
  • Coil condition
  • Refrigerant-system performance
  • Defrost operation
  • Drainage
  • System switching between heating and cooling

Once the cause is identified, we can explain the repair and discuss the condition of the overall system.

Heat Pump Repair for All HVAC Brands

Airmerica repairs all HVAC brands. While equipment designs and controls vary between manufacturers, the fundamentals of diagnosing airflow, electrical, refrigeration, and control problems remain important across heat pump systems.

The appropriate repair depends on the specific equipment, failed component, system condition, and parts availability.

Ducted and Ductless Heat Pump Repair

Heat pump technology is used in both traditional ducted systems and ductless mini splits. Although both move heat rather than creating cooling through a separate process, their indoor equipment, controls, zoning, drainage, and system configurations can differ considerably.

If your problem involves a ductless system, the dedicated mini split service is generally the better starting point because ductless equipment can have zone-specific error codes, condensate problems, indoor fan issues, communication faults, and other system-specific conditions.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Heat Pump?

A heat pump does not need to be replaced simply because it needs a repair. When the problem is isolated and the rest of the system remains in good condition, repair may provide the better value.

Replacement may become worth comparing when:

  • The equipment has repeated failures
  • A major component requires an expensive repair
  • Parts are becoming difficult to obtain
  • The system no longer provides reliable heating and cooling
  • Multiple components show significant deterioration
  • The equipment has substantial airflow or compatibility issues
  • Repair costs are becoming difficult to justify compared with replacement

Airmerica focuses on the condition of the equipment and the economics of the repair rather than assuming older equipment automatically needs replacement.

Ocean Hills Climate and Heat Pump Performance

Ocean Hills has a mild North County climate with coastal influence, but homes still experience both heating and cooling demand throughout the year. Warm inland air, sunny exposures, cooler winter nights, home orientation, insulation, windows, and building design can all affect how frequently a heat pump operates.

Coastal conditions can also expose outdoor HVAC equipment to moisture and airborne contaminants over time. Outdoor coils need adequate airflow, and equipment condition can affect heat transfer during both heating and cooling operation.

Because heat pumps operate during more than one season, a developing problem may first become noticeable when the system switches from cooling to heating or back again.

Heat Pump Maintenance Can Help Identify Developing Problems

Routine maintenance cannot prevent every heat pump repair, but it can provide an opportunity to identify dirty components, electrical deterioration, airflow restrictions, drainage concerns, and unusual operating conditions before they become more disruptive.

Heat pumps deserve particular attention because the same equipment may operate during both warmer and cooler weather. Components that accumulate operating hours throughout the year can experience different wear patterns than cooling-only equipment.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs

Why is my heat pump running but not cooling?

A heat pump may run without cooling properly because of restricted airflow, dirty coils, thermostat or control issues, electrical failures, outdoor-unit problems, refrigerant-related conditions, or other system faults. Several problems can create similar symptoms, so the system should be tested before a repair is recommended.

Why is my heat pump not heating?

Heating problems can involve airflow, thermostats, sensors, controls, electrical components, refrigerant performance, reversing components, outdoor equipment, or supplemental heating components where applicable. Diagnosis should include testing how the system operates in heating mode.

Why is there ice on my heat pump?

Some frost can be normal during heating operation, and the heat pump uses a defrost cycle to remove it. Heavy ice buildup or frost that does not clear may indicate a problem with airflow, coils, sensors, controls, fans, refrigerant performance, or the defrost system.

Can a heat pump cool properly but not heat?

Yes. Some heat pump failures affect one operating mode more than the other. Controls, sensors, reversing components, refrigerant performance, and other system conditions can cause heating and cooling behavior to differ.

Why does my heat pump run for so long?

Heat pumps can normally have longer operating cycles, especially during more demanding weather. Excessive operation combined with poor comfort may be related to airflow restrictions, thermostat settings, duct losses, equipment sizing, dirty components, refrigerant performance, or mechanical problems.

Do you repair older heat pumps?

Yes. Airmerica repairs older heat pumps when repair remains practical. Equipment condition, repair history, parts availability, the failed component, and overall system performance should be considered when deciding between repair and replacement.

Do you repair all heat pump brands?

Yes. Airmerica repairs all HVAC brands, including heat pump systems. The appropriate repair depends on the specific equipment, diagnosis, system condition, and availability of compatible replacement parts when required.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

Repair may be the better option when the problem is isolated and the rest of the system remains in good condition. Replacement may be worth comparing when an older heat pump has repeated failures, requires a major repair, has limited parts availability, or no longer provides reliable heating and cooling.
